Leave of Absence

1. How to Apply for Leave of Absence (Internet Application Period)
① Internet Application Period: SAINT log-in → 「Academics Records」 → 「Leave of Absence」

② Required Documents:
  • Copies of Alien Registration Card and passport.
  • Submission: Office of One Stop Service (A106) / onestop@sogang.ac.kr / FAX: 02-705-8004

2. Leave of Absence during Semester
① Applying for leave of absence during semester or when internet service is unavailable: print out a leave of absence form with signatures of student, parents (with contact information), and faculty advisor after a meeting, get confirmation from the Office of Finance (A101), and submit to the One-Stop Service Center
  • Refund will not be available to students with FA grade/Leave of Absence will not be approved if guardian’s signature is missing

  • Leave of Absence Form, Copies of Alien Registration Card and passport.

3. Restrictions on Leave of Absence
- Leave of absence is not permitted for new students and transfer students during their first semester of school. In case of military service, serious illness, and family travel incurred in line of public affairs, special case of temporary leave shall be permitted with documentary evidence.
- Leaves of absence is permitted for a total of three years. (Three semesters for transfer students)
- Students with first dismissal warning may not take a leave of absence, but students with second dismissal warning can obtain a leave of absence. (Should be submitted a letter of explanation and a note from faculty advisor along with the leave of absence form)

4. Cautions
- When an international student who is staying with a STUDENT(D-2) visa takes a leave of absence, even if the period of stay remains, the visa will be expired as soon as the leave of absence gets reported to immigration office.
- If a student cannot leave the country within 30 days of the application due to personal reasons, he or she may apply for adjustment of departure date at the immigration office of jurisdiction. If a student does not apply for adjustment of departure date, he or she must leave the country within 14 days of notification to appear from the Immigration Office. Such students may be classified as an illegal alien unless he or she leaves the country. Therefore, be sure to leave in time according to the guidance of the Immigration Office.
- Freshmen and transfer students cannot take a leave of absence in the first semester. Students who received a dismissal warning for poor achievement cannot take a leave of absence in the following semester.
- A student must return his or her alien registration card at the airport immigration on departure after taking a leave of absence. (It is not necessary to return the ARC when departing for travel, etc.)

Return from Leave of Absence

1. Applying for Return from Leave of Absence and Certificate of Admission

② For international students (subject to D-2 visa) to enter Korea for returning to school, they must reapply for visa at Korean embassy(or consulate) in their respective countries. Since visa issuance may take a long time, it is advised that students to contact the One-Stop Service Center before the application period of Return from Leave of Absence and request for the Certificate of Admission promptly.
③ Required Document: Copy of passport.

2. Visa Issuance
- If students request for Certificate of Admission, the One-Stop Service Center will send via e-mail.
- Once the Certificate of Admission has been acquired, international students must apply for STUDENT(D-2) visa at Korean embassy(or consulate) in their respective countries. In addition, students must contact the embassy prior to visiting in order to check for any other necessary documents to be requested.

3. Course Registration: Students who plan to return from leave of absence can only proceed to course registration after return from leave of absence has been completed, it is advised students to regularly check school schedule and complete the process before the course registration date.

4. Tuition Payment: Students may either enter Korea to make a bank transfer in Korea or make an overseas payment (wire transfer charges applied) within the tuition payment period.

5. Foreign Registration: Students must register for their new Alien Registration Card at an Immigration Office within 90 days of entering Republic of Korea.
