Foreigners wishing to extend their stay in Korea beyond the approved duration must obtain a permit for an extension of stay.
Remaining in Korea beyond the visa expiration without extending the stay period is considered illegal residence, and fines may be imposed upon applying for an extension after the expiration date.
The visa expiration date for most students holding a Study(D-2) visa will be March or September.
Visa extension can be applied starting from 4 months before the expiration date

Apply through OIA group application at the beginning of every semester (Check the OIA notice board)
Students enrolling in an additional semester due to insufficient graduation credits or other reasons must apply for an extension of stay and extend their visa.
- Maximum stay period limits by degree program: (Bachelor's) 6 years from admission, (Master's) 5 years from admission, (Doctorate) 8 years from admission
In addition to the basic required documents for extension of stay, students must submit the following additional documents.
- Thesis advisor confirmation form [Download]
- Must be signed by your advisor and verified by the International Office
- Financial proof
- Bank balance certificate in your name from a domestic bank
- Required balance: 1,070,000 KRW * number of extension months (one semester: 6 months, 6,420,000 KRW)
